When I started my journey in generative AI and experimenting with #myESRA the first issue I ran into is bad prompts. Even my experience with other generative AI applications – hello ChatGPT – was useless because talking to a bot is not like talking to a human colleague who understands the context around E&S specific questions. So, I reluctantly admitted that it is not the machine’s fault that my prompts were suboptimal.
If you’re ready to get the most out of your interactions with AI chatbots, such as #myESRA, let me give you some ideas to improve your prompting. Let me share some tips and tricks I learnt (the hard way) during the development and testing of #myESRA and #PrivateESRA.
A prompt is the instruction we give to the bot to complete the task. Obviously, the better the prompt the better the output or answer. What makes a prompt ‘good’?
· State clearly what you’re asking for - instruction, a task to be executed
· Be specific about the type of response you’re seeking – list, context, number, statistic?
· Open ended prompts encourage creativity and critical thinking
· Provide sufficient context or background information – which country, what industry?
· Use clear, simple language that is easy to understand
A good prompt is the foundation of effective AI communication. It clearly conveys your intent and provides the AI with the necessary context to generate a helpful response. A well-written prompt can help you:
Get accurate and relevant information
Obtain helpful advice and recommendations
Solve problems and make informed decisions
Enhance your overall AI experience
Follow the tips below on how to write effective prompts with examples:
1. Be Clear and Concise
Avoid using vague or ambiguous language. Clearly state your intent or question, and provide enough context for the AI to understand your topic or situation.
Example:
Bad: "Can you tell me something interesting about renewable energy?"
Good: "What are the current trends in renewable energy investments in the Balkans?"
2. Provide Context
Give the AI enough context to understand your intent and provide relevant information. This may include providing background information, specifying the domain or industry, or mentioning any relevant details.
Example:
Bad: "What's your opinion on this article about climate change?"
Good: "Can you summarize the key points of the article ‘Climate change mitigation through energy efficiency investments’ published in XXX magazine last week?"
3. Specify Your Intent
Clearly state what you want the AI to help you with, whether it's providing information, answering a question, or generating a solution. Be specific and focus on a single topic or question.
Example:
Bad: "How do I write a good prompt for myESRA?"
Good: "Can you provide some tips for writing effective prompts for AI chatbots?"
4. Avoid Jargon and Technical Terms
Use everyday language and avoid technical terms or jargon that might confuse the AI. Keep your prompt simple and easy to understand.
Example:
Bad: "What's the resettlement legislation in Pakistan?"
Good: "List the legislation governing expropriation in Pakistan?"
5. Keep it Simple
Avoid complex sentences or structures that might confuse the AI. Break down your prompt into smaller, more manageable parts.
Example:
Bad: " I need the scoping report, ESIA report and socio-economic baseline for an oil pipeline that we are just developing"
Good: "I am working on an oil project in Country X. I need an outline for a scoping report with main headings and some context. I need an outline for an ESIA with main headings and some context. I need a questionnaire for a socio-economic survey that includes main headings and questions to be asked under each heading."
